The family story
This is the family of three sisters, the daughters of Seymour Bald and Dorothy Schron. On their father’s side the Balds and the Ochs family came from Świrz in eastern Galicia, and the Wanks and Weinsteins from Wólka Podleśna and Sokołów near Rzeszów. On their mother’s side the Schrons came from Warsaw and, likely, Goworowo, and the Szymkowicz, Rakower and Kerszenbaum families from Maków and the village of Bazar.
Between 1904 and 1925 they crossed to New York, where the two lines met again on the Lower East Side: Isidore Bald married Bella Wank, the girl from down the block on Rivington Street, in 1926, and Benjamin Schron married Eva Szymkowicz of Bazar. Their landsmanshaft plots at Mount Zion and Mount Lebanon still hold them together.
The ladder
Read upward from the three sisters. In the generation of great-great-grandparents the names come from the parents’ own records. Feiwel and Malke Schlanger are named in Dora Weinstein’s 1878 birth entry (Likely); Jakob and Pesla Weinstein are Possible. In the top row, Szapse and Taube Oks of Świrz are possibly Tillie’s great-grandparents (the names match; the link is not proven), and Josek is possibly the father of Tauba Kerszenbaum. Labels are shown where a link is less than Confirmed. Tap a name for the person’s card.
