Morris (Moische, Chaim Moshe) Shron was a tailor, born about 1856. He married Frieda about 1887; by 1910 she had borne eight children, all of them living. Morris came to New York in 1904 and Frieda followed from Warsaw with the children in January 1910.
His arrival is likely found (Likely): “Moische Schron”, 40, married, a shoemaker from Goworowo, landed from the SS Rotterdam on 30 August 1904, going to his “brother A. Schron, 80½ Attorney St”. The year and the town fit, and Attorney Street runs through the family’s story: his daughters were sent to him there in 1907, and Frieda died at 32 Attorney Street in 1944. Against it are the word “shoemaker” and an age young for a man born about 1856.
All eight children are now known, oldest first: Max (born 1888), Abe (1890), Fannie (about 1891), Lena (about 1893), Benjamin (1896/97), Clara (about 1900), Bessie or Beatrice (about 1901) and Joseph (1903). Each has a marriage record naming Morris and Frieda as parents (Confirmed). The two that had been missing were the eldest sons, both born in Warsaw: Max married Minnie Yavitz in 1909, and Abe married Sophie Jawitz in 1912. The brothers married two sisters, daughters of Mendel Jawitz and Fannie Katz. Max’s children were Benjamin, Louis, Doris (Dora), William and Seymour; Louis died in 1993 and Doris (Cohen) in 1991 (Likely, Social Security index).
Two daughters came ahead of their mother. On 7 November 1907 Chnike, 16, and Feige, 14, landed from Warsaw, going to their “father Moische Schron” on Attorney Street; they are likely Fannie and Lena (Likely), though which girl is which is possibly settled only by Lena’s age. They gave their nearest relative as “mother Ester Schron” of Franciszkańska 29, Warsaw, the same address Frieda gave in 1910. The name is a puzzle: it was possibly their grandmother Esther (née Burr), Morris’s mother, still alive in Warsaw.
In the 1915 state census Morris, 55, and Freda, 46, lived at no. 127 (Broome Street) with Benjamin, Clara, Bessie and Joseph. Bessie, or Beatrice, married Paul Goldstein, a cutter, twice in December 1921: at the Municipal Building on the 10th and at home at 130 Broome Street on the 31st. Joseph married Bertha Goldstein in 1925, and Lena’s 1916 wedding was held at 127 Broome Street itself.
Frieda’s maiden name is shown here as Mandel or Chenick. Three children’s marriage records say Mandel; her own death record says Chenick, daughter of Mendel Chenick and Deborah Chiniak. The new records point one way (Likely): her surname was a Chenick or Szenicki type of name, written “Kshinok” on Max’s 1909 marriage and “Schemitzky” on Joseph’s 1925 marriage, and “Mandel” came from her father’s first name, Mendel. Max’s record says both at once: “Frieda Kshinok Mandels”. A Harry Mandels who witnessed that wedding was possibly her brother.
Morris died on 23 December 1921; his death record names his parents Julius Shron and Esther Burr. Frieda died on 23 November 1944. Both lie in the Govorow (Goworowo) society plot at Mount Zion Cemetery. Two graves from Morris lies Abraham Shron, also a tailor, of 127 Broome Street, who died in 1924. He is possibly Morris’s brother, the “A. Schron” of 1904, but only possibly: his death record names his father Joseph, while Morris’s names Julius (and the Goworowo gate possibly Yoel), so the 1904 “brother” may have been a brother-in-law or a cousin (Possible; it was Likely until 26 October 2026). His widow, Sarah Breine née Bressler, died in Brooklyn in 1944 and lies in the same plot.
A new clue from the Goworowo society’s gate at Mount Zion, the Sons of Aaron Solomon of Govorow (Possible): among its officers is “Chaim Moshe b. Yoel, Ex-Pres” (ר' חיים משה בר יואל עקס פרעז), and among its members “Frayda Ester b. Menachem” (פריידא אסתר בר מנחם). These are possibly Morris and Frieda: Morris’s Hebrew name was Chaim Moshe and his father was Julius, a name often used for Yoel; Frieda’s father was Mendel, short for Menachem Mendel; and both are buried in this society’s plot. The gate carries no surnames, so it is possibly them, not proven. If it is, Morris’s father’s Hebrew name was possibly Yoel and Morris was possibly a past president of the society.
