Goworowo roots

Where the Schrons came from

Morris and Frieda Schron, and Abraham Shron beside them, were buried by the Govorow society: the landsmanshaft of Goworowo, a town north-east of Warsaw near Ostrołęka. Morris’s likely 1904 passenger list now gives Goworowo as his last home, so Goworowo is the family’s town before Warsaw (Likely).

In the 1840s the Jews of Goworowo married in the Ostrów Mazowiecka registers, and the original pages are now read (free scans of the State Archive in Pułtusk). They show older Szrons: Mendel Szron, a tanner of 21 born at Czerwin, who married Chana Szylc in December 1846, and his sister Chana Szrom, 18, also born at Czerwin, who married Szymcha Czarka in December 1851. Both were children of Chaim and Judyta Szron, labourers living in Goworowo, and both acts say Chaim and Judyta were still living (Confirmed, as records). The acts name a grandfather “Julek”: the 1846 act calls Mendel’s father “Chaim Julkowicz” (son of Julek), the 1851 act calls Chana’s mother “Judyta Julkówna” (daughter of Julek). So a Julek, born about 1760–1790, is the earliest Szron on record, on one side or the other.

Morris’s father Julius (possibly Yoel) was possibly named for that Julek, which would make these Szrons possibly close kin of Morris (Possible). No record links them. Morris’s own birth is not in these books: every Ostrów birth index for 1855–1866 was read and no Szron appears after 1851, so by then Goworowo’s Jews were registered elsewhere, in books not online.

No New York arrival, marriage or death has been found for Julius Shron or Esther Burr; they probably never left Poland. Still to find: Abraham Shron’s exact tie to Morris, and the two brothers’ own crossings.
