Weinsteins & Schlangers of Sokołów
Two more generations, marked Likely
Dwojra’s own papers say she was born at Sokołów (Sokołów Małopolski) on 28 September 1878. The JRI-Poland index of Sokołów Jewish births has exactly such an entry: 1878, akt 112, “Dwore”, daughter of Boruch Weinstein and Chane Chaje Schlanger, born and living in Sokołów.
The register page itself has now been read, at the Rzeszów State Archive (fond 990, the Sokołów birth book of 1877–1886, page 43). Entry 112: “Dwore”, a girl, born on 11 November 1878 at house 617 in Sokołów and named on 16 November; her father Boruch Weinstein of Sokołów; her mother “Chane Chaje Weinstein, daughter of Feiwel and Malke Schlanger”. The midwife was Chane Goldstein.
This stays graded Likely, a strong Likely: name, year, town and both parents match Dora’s papers, but no record says outright that the two are one woman, and the day differs (11 November in the register, 28 September in her petition). Both dates are shown. Her 1925 cousin was a Weinstein in nearby Stobierna, and in 1912 her husband went to a “friend Solomon Schlanger”, a Sokołów name.
The entry gives a new generation: Feiwel and Malke Schlanger of Sokołów, the parents of Chane Chaje and great-great-great-grandparents of the three sisters (Likely). The index also lists two sons of Feiwel and Malke, Pinchas (1848) and Kiewe (1849), who were possibly Chane Chaje’s brothers. An earlier Feiwel and Scheindel Schlanger had daughters Ettel (1832) and Chana (1836); that was possibly the same Feiwel with a first wife, or a namesake.
On the Weinstein side the trail is Possible only: a Boruch Weinstein, aged 55, son of Jakob and Pesla, remarried in Sokołów in 1894 (that page has now been read too), and children named Gelle (1862) and Feiga (1864) were born there to a Baruch and Chana Weinstein. Nothing yet ties them to Dwojra’s father.
A Samuel Hersch Weinstein, merchant of Medynia Głogowska, son of Mendel and Roisa, married at Sokołów in 1901. Medynia Głogowska lies beside Stobierna, so he was possibly the “cousin Samuel Weinstein” Dora named in 1925. A Mendel Weinstein born in 1836, son of Jacob and Pessel, would make his father possibly a brother of Boruch, and Samuel possibly Dora’s first cousin.
